I love photographing a lifestyle photo session for families. I’ve realized in recent days that I enjoy capturing these types of moments the most and I have not done any in a while. And I miss it. I want to photograph your family in your home.. in your element. I want to capture your everyday in the place that makes your heart happy and where you are surrounded by all the things that bring joy to your life.
So what is a lifestyle photo session ?
My definition of a lifestyle photo session combines both documentary photography and classic portraiture. A lifestyle session with JIP is one that takes place in your home and takes an hour or so. The goal is to capture real life moments.. not posed.. and real emotions between you and your loved ones. The only props that will be used are those that have meaning and can be found in your surroundings. During the session, I will act like a fly on the wall to document interactions between everyone in front of my camera lens and I will create opportunities that will generate real-life type of images that you will forever treasure.
When is it a good time to schedule a lifestyle session?
Lifestyle sessions can be done year round. It is a great way to document when a new baby arrives, a day in your life doing what you enjoy with the ones you love, to celebrate a milestone, and to update family photos. Once you decide to book a lifestyle photo session, we will discuss the best time of day to schedule the session while considering when the light is best in your home.
What should I wear for a lifestyle session?
Keep it simple. In our homes we tend to be the most comfortable and we want to make sure to convey that in the images captured. And so, wear something that you are comfortable in. Neutral colors work best and consider your surroundings. The color scheme of your home should be considered when choosing wardrobe colors for a lifestyle session. Shoes are not required… barefoot at home is always a plus!
How do I prepare for a lifestyle session?
Because your home will be the backdrop for the session, I always encourage clients to declutter the shooting space a little. We don’t want the space to be completely changed since the idea of a lifestyle session is to capture your everyday in your REAL home. But it is a good idea to remove anything “extra” that doesn’t need to be in the images captured. Pale neutrals and whites really help to accentuate natural light so consider swapping colored bedding although not necessary at all. The key for your session is to plan activities that will allow the family to interact with each other. Consider including books to read, songs to sing and dance, and anything else that will be fun for all the family to do together.
