Okay hear me out…
I know everyone thinks they need a brand new photo location every year.
Like if we don’t find a fresh new field, a trendy new wall, or the prettiest new park… the photos won’t be “good enough.”
But I’m going to tell you something I’ve learned after photographing families for years:
The background doesn’t matter as much as you think.
Yep. I said it.
Because the real reason your family photos are beautiful has nothing to do with the location.
It’s your people.
It’s the way your kids change — like, FAST.
It’s the new missing teeth, the longer legs, the bigger smiles, the “I’m too cool for this” teen vibes (lol)…
And one of my favorite ways to truly SEE that growth?
Take your family photos at the same location every year.
Same spot.
Same background.
Same general setup.
And let me tell you… it is MAGIC
Why going back to the same place hits different
When you return to the same location year after year, something super sweet happens:
The location stays the same… but your kids don’t.
That tree you stood by last year? Still there.
That open field at golden hour? Still dreamy.
That bench you piled on as a family? Still waiting for you.
But your kids?
They’re taller.
Bigger.
Different.
Like… who gave them permission?!
And THAT’S what makes these photos so special.
Because it becomes so obvious: Same spot… new season of life.
The background becomes part of your family timeline
I love recreating photos because it turns into this little time capsule.
The location becomes the “constant,” so you can really notice the changes:
- the baby that was on your hip is now running wild
- the toddler who wouldn’t smile is now cheesing hard
- the little kid who still looked tiny is suddenly… not tiny at all
- and the teen who used to be your baby is now giving main character energy
It’s honestly one of the easiest ways to create a visual timeline of your family.
And the best part?
It’s simple.
No need to chase perfection.
No need to find the “best background” every year.
Just show up.
Because the point isn’t the location…
Let’s be real.
No one looks back at family photos ten years from now and says:
“Wow. What a great background.”
They say:
“That was the year he had that curly hair.”
“That was her gap-tooth season.”
“That was when they were obsessed with dinosaurs.”
“That was the year we were in the thick of motherhood and barely surviving… but look how happy we were.”
THAT is what you’re really capturing.
Not just what your family looks like… but what your life felt like.
Want to recreate yours this year?
If you have a spot you’ve taken photos before and you want to go back…
I’m your girl.
We can recreate the same poses, keep it fun + relaxed, and capture what matters most:
Your family — exactly as you are right now.
Because the location may stay the same… but the growth is the whole point.
